Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in Critical Visual Media Literacy and Empowerment

Duration: 5 weeks (50 hours)

Content and Structure

The course with the four modules, aims to provide learners with the necessary skills to better understand the significance of images in present societies.

Through the Massive Open Online Course of CLIP project, learners will develop the ability to detect images and recognize stereotypes in visual artefacts.

Learners will know how to navigate the visual landscape, discerning the credibility of the pictures they come across encounter in their daily life. By cultivating these essential competencies in contemporary society, participants will be better equipped to approach the continuous flow constant stream of images they encounter in all aspects of their life with a more critical and informed mindset approach. This applies to various contexts, ranging from educational to leisure activities, as well as in the search for reliable visual information.

The course includes video clips with experts, papers, open educational resources, additional material, self-assessment questions (quizzes) and practical activities.

  • Increasing awareness of visual media concepts crucial for examining the content of a visual message;
  • Strengthening the visual media literacy of HEI students;
  • Supporting people to acquire & develop competencies & skills on visual media literacy.

  • Introduce participants to the analysis of visual culture, encouraging them to a greater degree of visual literacy;
  • Empower today's society to acquire a certain awareness in understanding images;
  • Highlight and provide easy to understand key concepts directly needed for a critical visual media thinking.

Who is this course for?

  • Higher Education students of communication, journalism, and social science, as well as other faculties, and everybody with an interest in developing their visual media literacy competences

How to earn the Certificate of Successful completion?

Upon completion of the course and succeeding in at least 70% of both learning material and of graded activities (self-assessment with quizzes), learners will be able to achieve the Certificate of Successful Completion. Learners who will not be able to pass the success rate will acquire the Certification of Participation. All Certificates will be issued automatically, through the Online Platform, at the end of the course. Open badges will be awarded to learners after the successful completion of each Module.
